AFRICAN DWARF FROG

Habitat: simple covered fish tank.

Habits: Fairly active, and Yes!!! These guys sing!

These guys live entirely under water, coming up for air every now and then.

food requirements: frozen blood worms and or peleted food

You buy a package and keep it in the freezer. The package lasts me anywhere from one to two months. The best part is, it's ok to skip a day now and then. (no need to find someone to feed your pets when you go away for the weekend.) If you can't find blood worms frozen, you can substitute using dried worms...I personally prefer the frozen stuff, partially cause they seem healthier, partially because it seems less messy. Other options are frozen brine shrimp and even dried brine shrimp. In fact, it's not uncommon for them to snap at each other when searching out their food! It looks a lot as if they have the hiccups, but they are just snooping around trying to find something good to eat. If you're wondering where to find such tasty morsels, most pet store that have a variety of fish carry them.

Care & Feeding

These frogs are bottom feeders. Their preferred diet consists of blood worms (live or frozen), small (or chopped) earthworms, tubifex worms, etc. They are not visual hunters. They detect food by scent. Once they are close to the food their relatively poor but binocular eyesight will detect movement. They feed by striking suddenly at their prey. They don't chew their food but gulp it down whole. These frogs will eat huge amounts of food for their size. Care must be taken not to over feed as they will search for any and all food in their tank and eat until every morsel is gone. It's best to feed them every other day. Adjust the amount of food so that their bellies are just beginning to bulge when the food is gone. These frogs do not ever need to leave the water. In fact they will dehydrate very quickly if they don't have access to water. Their water should be filtered and temperature controlled. Frogs are not able to regulate their body temperature internally the way other animals do. Frogs rely on their environment being the proper temperature for them to be comfortable.

Water Quality

It is extremely important to understand how to establish and maintain a high level of water quality within your aquarium. This is especially true if you are keeping fish, but is also true if you are keeping aquatic frogs. Poor water quality will shorten the life of any species by exposing it to toxins. Poor water quality will make an aquatic animal more prone to disease and infection, let alone the smell that will occure if not kept clean.

Grow a Frog

This site I found has helped me out a lot. If you want to grow a frog from a tadpole, this is the place to go. ok I am not drumming up business for them, it is just that this is a neat site and the tadpoles grow into frogs. They even have the food for you also. You do not have to run out for blood worms or crickets ect. These guys live on a peleted form of food. They are the best of my pets to care for now. Clean water is still a must for a heathly frog. So stay on top of that and these frogs can live for many years.
